When we had decided on the location more or less (Valencia region)<\/a> and we had a chat with our friends about living in Spain<\/a>, the next step was about finding a school. As I had mentioned in my first post I have two daughters and in the summer of 2024 when we started considering relocation they were 8 and 4 (Scarlett was born in July 2016 and Sofia in January 2020). So according to the British educational system Scarlett started Year 4 in September 2024 and Sofia started Reception. The idea was that we would move to Spain after the school year finished in July 2025. Finding a school in Spain was for us one of the most important aspects as we wanted them to settle well in the new country. We didn\u2019t know how all this move was going to play out. In September 2024 we were still months away and it felt like we had lots of time. This was especially true when we heard that our friends\u2019 process, from the decision to actual move, took 6 months!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PUBLIC OR PRIVATE?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first thought regarding school was about choosing one of the public schools. The obvious reason was that the public schools are free (we didn\u2019t know what the job situation will be for us in Spain) so we would look into making our monthly expenses as low as possible. However, in one of her first emails Olivera mentioned that her children go to Iale International School. She had argued that in Valencia region public schools use 80\/90% of time Valenciano as the main taught language. She had said that this was one of the downsides of living here that she wished she had known before they relocated over here. The mentioned school teaches Valenciano only once a week and the rest of the subjects are taught in English and Spanish with the Spanish curriculum. Moreover, the pre-schoolers start learning Chinese, which continues throughout their further education and from the primary they learn French too. This was a lot of information to take in and, I must admit, sounded a bit scary. My daughters are native British speakers and can communicate in Polish too, but to add to this mix Spanish, Valencian, Chinese and French sounded ridiculous! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Postanowili\u015bmy by\u0107 otwarci w tej kwestii (znajomo\u015b\u0107 zbyt wielu j\u0119zyk\u00f3w nie zaszkodzi, prawda?) i bior\u0105c pod uwag\u0119 entuzjastyczne opinie naszych znajomych o szkole, zapytali\u015bmy o miejsca dla naszych dziewcz\u0105t. Pierwszy e-mail, kt\u00f3ry wys\u0142a\u0142am do Iale, by\u0142 pod koniec listopada i bardzo szybko otrzyma\u0142am odpowied\u017a z tematem wielkimi literami: NO PLAZAS 2020 ENGLISH. W e-mailu dzia\u0142 informacji i rekrutacji poinformowa\u0142, \u017ce na zaj\u0119cia dla os\u00f3b urodzonych w 2020 roku nie ma miejsc i nie b\u0119dzie ich w ci\u0105gu najbli\u017cszych kilku lat. Nic nie wspomniano o Scarlett. To by\u0142o takie przygn\u0119biaj\u0105ce. Rozmawia\u0142am z nasz\u0105 znajom\u0105, kt\u00f3ra powiedzia\u0142a, \u017ce \u200b\u200bszko\u0142a zyska\u0142a na popularno\u015bci w ci\u0105gu ostatnich kilku lat i trudno jest dosta\u0107 miejsce. Dobrze, \u017ce zacz\u0119li\u015bmy szuka\u0107 wcze\u015bnie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We Googled schools around La Eliana but then one that we got interested in was The British College La Canada. By then we had already booked our flights to Valencia for the February half term. Shortly before Christmas I emailed British College and scheduled a visit and the interview in February. Unfazed by the brisk reply from Iale I decided to try again. I sent them another email saying that they didn\u2019t reply anything regarding Scarlett. I had also mentioned that we would be in Valencia in February and I had asked if we could only come and see the school. The reply was again very unhelpful saying that they were sorry but they already have 2 students waiting for a place in Year 4 (where Scarlett would be going) and they were sorry they were unable to assist us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FEBRUARY VISIT TO VALENCIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luty nadszed\u0142 szybko, a nasza podr\u00f3\u017c do Walencji by\u0142a wszystkim, czego potrzebowali\u015bmy, aby potwierdzi\u0107 nasz\u0105 decyzj\u0119 o przeprowadzce. Sp\u0119dzili\u015bmy 4 noce w apartamencie Airbnb w Ciutat Vella, a nast\u0119pnie 2 noce u znajomych w La Pobla de Vallbona. Chocia\u017c by\u0142 luty, pogoda by\u0142a pi\u0119kna. Kobiety ju\u017c przechadza\u0142y si\u0119 w tradycyjnych strojach Fallas. Na Plaza de la Reina odbywa\u0142 si\u0119 jaki\u015b festiwal, na scenie znajdowa\u0142a si\u0119 scena, na kt\u00f3rej Falleras wykonywa\u0142y tradycyjne ta\u0144ce. Wygl\u0105da\u0142o to przepi\u0119knie i by\u0142o mi\u0142o usi\u0105\u015b\u0107 sobie i popatrze\u0107, jak Hiszpanie kultywuj\u0105 swoje tradycje, podczas gdy tak wiele narod\u00f3w traci swoje. Podczas naszego pobytu odwiedzili\u015bmy Bioparc, wybrali\u015bmy si\u0119 na pla\u017c\u0119 i po prostu kontynuowali\u015bmy zwiedzanie. Zgodnie z planem zwiedzili\u015bmy British College La Canada. Szko\u0142a wygl\u0105da\u0142a \u015bwietnie \u2013 by\u0142a czysta, przestronna i oferowa\u0142a mn\u00f3stwo zaj\u0119\u0107 pozalekcyjnych. Nie mia\u0142abym nic przeciwko, gdyby nie fakt, \u017ce nie chcieli\u015bmy mieszka\u0107 w La Canada. Chocia\u017c wielu zamo\u017cnych Walencji ma tam swoje wille, okolica wydawa\u0142a si\u0119 zbyt cicha i pozbawiona innych udogodnie\u0144. By\u0142 tam park, kt\u00f3ry nie wygl\u0105da\u0142 zbyt zach\u0119caj\u0105co, a wok\u00f3\u0142 stacji metra widzieli\u015bmy tylko kilka kawiarni i ma\u0142ych sklepik\u00f3w. Spacer ze stacji do szko\u0142y wydawa\u0142 si\u0119 d\u0142ugi (oko\u0142o 20 minut). Przynajmniej mieli\u015bmy wyb\u00f3r, poniewa\u017c szko\u0142a mia\u0142a miejsca dla obu dziewcz\u0105t. Pomy\u015bleli\u015bmy, \u017ce po przyje\u017adzie do Wielkiej Brytanii przeprowadzimy troch\u0119 wi\u0119cej poszukiwa\u0144 i spr\u00f3bujemy dotrze\u0107 r\u00f3wnie\u017c do innych szk\u00f3\u0142.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mieli\u015bmy lot powrotny 21 lutego wczesnym rankiem. 20 lutego zabrali\u015bmy dziewczynki do Gulliver Park w Walencji. Tam dosta\u0142am e-mail od Iale z informacj\u0105, \u017ce podj\u0119to decyzj\u0119 o otwarciu kilku miejsc na rok 2020, wiec Sofia mog\u0142a si\u0119 tam dosta\u0107. Sytuacja Scarlett by\u0142a nieco bardziej skomplikowana, poniewa\u017c na li\u015bcie oczekuj\u0105cych wci\u0105\u017c by\u0142y dwie rodziny, ale z e-maila wynika\u0142o, \u017ce istnieje ewentualnie mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 przyj\u0119cia jej tak\u017ce. Zapytali, czy mogliby\u015bmy przyj\u015b\u0107 i zobaczy\u0107 szko\u0142\u0119 21 lutego. Szybko zadzwoni\u0142am wi\u0119c do mojej przyjaci\u00f3\u0142ki i powiedzia\u0142am jej o nowinach. Um\u00f3wi\u0142a nas na obejrzenie szko\u0142y tego samego dnia i od razu pobiegli\u015bmy z parku szuka\u0107 taks\u00f3wki \u017ceby sie dosta\u0107 do La Eliana. Po zwiedzaniu i d\u0142ugiej rozmowie z Louise, zast\u0119pc\u0105 dyrektora ds. mi\u0119dzynarodowych, zgodzi\u0142y\u015bmy si\u0119 ui\u015bci\u0107 op\u0142at\u0119 rejestracyjn\u0105 za Sofi\u0119, aby zapewni\u0107 jej miejsce, i wpisa\u0142y\u015bmy Scarlett na list\u0119 oczekuj\u0105cych. By\u0142o to ryzykowne, ale uznali\u015bmy, \u017ce mamy wi\u0119ksze szanse na znalezienie miejsca dla Scarlett, je\u015bli mamy ju\u017c jedno dziecko w szkole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next month was very stressful. We continued to worry what we would do if there won\u2019t be any places in Year 4. It would be awful if the girls had to start their new life being in different schools. We researched some schools and sent some inquiries but haven\u2019t received any replies. In the meantime Scarlett had to also take an Entry test in Iale as they had to assess her level of English and Maths (children also have to take a test in Spanish but they knew Scareltt\u2019s level was very basic and they said it wouldn\u2019t be a deciding factor in her case). I have to admit my husband worried more about all this situation. Deep down I knew if it was meant to be, it would sort itself out. So after a month of uncertainty we had received an email from the school saying that there was a place available for Scarlett as well. And just like that the school problem was solved and we could focus on other things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHOOL OPTIONS IN SPAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many families thinking about relocating need to consider what school options they have in Spain. The main factor is if you have to pay the tuition or not, so there is a choice between public schools (free), semi private – concertados (there is some tuition fee but normally much lower than in private schools ) and private (full tuition fee). Local public Spanish schools offer national curriculum while many private schools offer either international baccalaureate (IB) or are bilingual, which means they teach local curriculum but with the increased level of English. The application process will vary depending on the type of school the family chooses but for the private schools it often starts quite early. We were told that by the end of February the parents who already have their children in school have to notify the school if they want to keep the place for the following school year. That gives the families waiting the chance to get in. The earlier you are on the waiting list, the more chances you have to get in once the school confirms there are places available. On the other hand for the public schools the application process starts at the end of May or in June and to be able to apply you will have to have the Empadronamiento (which is the free, mandatory registration of your address at the local town hall). When choosing the school the families should definitely consider if they want a private or public school which will also determine the curriculum, the location of the school and school facilities. Finding a school in Spain can be challenging.
